“Why Won’t You Listen To Me”
Presented by Dave Walker, BSE, LNHA and Sharon Thomas, BSN, RN, RAC-CT
This presentation will explain the impact of impersonal care on residents with dementia. Discussion and educational information will take place after watching five short scenarios involving assistance for a person living with dementia. This presentation will open up discussion on how best to provide resident specific support and assistance. Each brief scenario is designed to demonstrate the impact of a caregiver’s tone, actions, inactions, and level of sensitivity to the resident’s needs. This up-close-and–personal look at caregiving will give the audience a chance to dissect and analyze how they provide care and inspire a deeper understanding of how to interact positively with persons living with dementia. The overall presentation will discuss how “knowing and understanding the person” is essential in order to provide individual personal care. Effective communication techniques for dementia residents will also be discussed.
